About the venue

MetLife Stadium opened in 2010 to replace the original Giants Stadium on the same Meadowlands lot in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside Manhattan. It is the only NFL venue shared full-time by two teams (the New York Giants and the New York Jets), and at roughly 82,500 seats remains one of the largest stadiums in the league. The building has already hosted a Super Bowl (XLVIII, in February 2014) and has been the centerpiece of the New York / New Jersey region's bid for major events ever since.

For the 2026 World Cup, MetLife draws the marquee assignment: the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday, July 19. It hosts eight matches in total across the group stage and the knockout rounds, building toward that final. The artificial turf used for NFL play is being overlaid with natural grass to FIFA specifications for the tournament window, and the venue will be the most visible American building of the competition by a wide margin.
